To be effective legal research teachers, we must understand and teach how generative AI interacts with different legal sources. Statutes provide an excellent example of how a legal source may be treated differently by generative AI tools. Statutes are not static like caselaw, nor do they contain as much text. As a result, generative AI tools often handle statutes differently than they do caselaw. Students must understand these nuances to be effectively prepared to perform legal research with generative AI. This session will present examples of how to successfully teach students the pitfalls of statutory research with generative AI and how to guard against potential problems.
